Acolytes The ministry of acolyte is a very important
part of worship, and worship is the most important thing a community of faith
does. Acolytes are, first of all, members of the worshiping assembly. Acolytes
must be ten years old, old enough to be part of our First Communion class. The
ministry of Acolyte is not limited to members of First English Church and other
interested members of the Richmond Community may serve. Acolytes are also
entrusted with special tasks which can be listed under three headings:
Preparation
Acolytes are responsible for lighting and extinguishing the Altar candles and
candelabra before and after services. When appropriate, they also light the
Easter Candle and the Advent wreath.
Leadership
Acolytes exercise leadership during the worship service. They are leaders of the
people in their participation in worship and aid the Choirs and others in
leading the congregation in words, postures and gestures.
Assistance
Acolytes assist during communion as directed by the Pastor and should be ready
to be asked to assist at other times.
Specifics of the duties of acolytes are covered in First English’s Acolyte
Training Program. For more information, to volunteer to serve as an acolyte, or
to request training, contact our
