Welcome...
to First English Lutheran Church on historic Monument Avenue in Richmond, Virginia. We are a congregation of over 400 members of various ages and backgrounds, from all over the metropolitan Richmond area. Our mission statement sums up very well what we seek to do: “We are a Lutheran Community Celebrating the Gospel of Jesus Christ and Striving Toward Faithful Living in God's World.”
In 1869 a small group of German Lutherans gathered in Richmond to found St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. At that time there were two other Lutheran congregations in the city worshiping in the German language. In 1876 the members of the fledgling congregation changed their name to First English to emphasize the fact that they were committed to ministry in the language of this country; in 1911 they made a bold move in building a new church at Stuart Circle on Monument Avenue, which at that time was at the western limits of the city.
To this day we remain proud of our Lutheran heritage, confidently rooted in the Gospel of God’s grace, and deliberate in our concern to be both reverent to God’s Word and relevant to God’s world. We invite you to become more acquainted with First English by browsing these web pages where you can learn about our exciting ministries and discover why more and more people are visiting us for the first time each week for worship here in our beautiful historic sanctuary. Please join us soon for services at 8:15 and 10:30 every Sunday morning! I look forward to meeting you in person here at First English.
