12/29 - Pastor's Post

What wonderful worship services we had at First English on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! Each one had a special emphasis: the Children's Pageant at 5 pm on Christmas Eve, the Christmas Eve Candelight Service at 10:30, and the Christmas Day Sunday Morning Service at 10:30, all with Holy Communion. Thank you, one and all, for your part in making these worship experiences so special! As I say each year, there's no place on earth we'd rather be on Christmas Eve than in our beloved church, and this year we had the extra chance to hold our normal Sunday worship on Christmas Day itself!
Now I would like to wish all our members and friends a happy and blessed New Year. As part of my hopes for the year to come, I would like as we begin the 500th. Anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation to share the last verse from Martin Luther's hymn "From Heaven Above to Earth I Come" (Vom Himmel Hoch"), both in English and in the original German:
Glory to God in highest heav'n
Who unto us the Son has giv'n.
With angels sing in pious mirth
A glad new year to all the earth!

Lob, Ehr sei Gott im höchstem Thron,
der uns schenkt seinen ein'gen Sohn;
des freuen sich der Engel Schar'
und singen uns solch neues Jahr.

Finally, looking back on the year past and what has been going on at both First English and the Virginia Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, I urge you to follow the link below. At least one picture should be familiar!

Again, God's blessings for 2017!
Faithfully yours,
Pastor John Schweitzer
