First English volunteers will soon be taking the first tangible steps in setting up the raised garden beds and non-perishable food pantry! Volunteers are needed to construct the garden beds and pantry on Saturday June 3 at 10 am. Interested volunteers may sign up in the following ways:
Garden survey: https://forms.gle/3VzJbFyBrEW6PJPy7
Food Pantry survey: https://forms.gle/pDAHqJNtb1gp7qQWA
For questions or help completing the survey, please contact Jeff Nelson (jeff289@comcast.net) or Anne Kemp (arwkemp@verizon.net) by May 27. In the event of inclement weather, we will contact volunteers the night before with a rain date.
All needed materials will be on site. Both projects will be located behind the First English Education Building, with the garden beds in the parking space nearest Grace Covenant church.
These projects are funded through the First English “Opening Doors to Faith Campaign”.
Volunteers are essential to make these projects happen- please join us! All skill levels are welcome.

Polly is a transplant. She moved from the Pittsburg area to Norfolk with her husband and children, and raised her children there. She worked as a Church Administrator and was active in First Lutheran Norfolk. In 2006, she decided to move to Richmond to be close to her daughter. The resemblance of the building to First Lutheran Norfolk was what first drew her to First English Richmond.
On the inside of First English, she was pleased to learn about Adult Sunday School classes. Polly liked the idea of small groups of adults learning and growing in the Lutheran faith. Her choice was made. First English Lutheran Richmond was her new Church home.
She felt welcomed and began learning alongside other adults. After a while, Polly joined the teaching staff, focusing her teaching gifts on adults and their need to know the Bible and the church’s teachings.
Polly didn’t stop there. She served as a member of council, volunteered in the office and supported Leisure Group activities as well as Wednesdays Together.
Polly was looking for a church home that felt like the church home she was used to. While the outside of the building was the first connection to that feeling of comfort, once inside, she connected with her spiritual gifts and God used her to help this community we all share thrive and grow.
